When Alice married Gregory, she decided to ditch professional photography in favor of her friends and a horde of disposable cameras. This got us thinking – what’s missing from the official portrait? The photos from Nell Diamond and Teddy Wasserman’s recent wedding in the south of France are certainly gorgeous (and featured quite a bit in Vogue), but Nell’s personal photos give a more authentic behind-the-scenes feel. She was generous in sharing them, as well as her preparations for the big day. See below:
The week before the wedding, I was stuck in the middle. I was in business school and as soon as the final exams were over my now husband Teddy and I flew to Cape Antibes, where we had our ceremony. Growing up in London, I always had this romantic idea of English country weddings – kind of like a cop drawing – but when we got engaged, Teddy’s only wish was to get married by the sea. So we found a compromise in the charming gardens of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the south of France, one of my favorite places on earth.
We arrived in France in a violent hailstorm – the electricity went out throughout the region. Needless to say, I am terrified that my outdoor ritual is in jeopardy. However, when the guests arrived on Thursday, it was 80 degrees and the sun was shining – until everyone left on Sunday! Every morning, my beauty routine begins with a jump straight into the ocean from the hotel’s legendary diving board – the best way to wake up! Other than that, I can’t say I’ve prepared much. Teddy and I are obsessed with juicers, so we try to drink a green juice every day before our wedding. I can definitely feel my skin getting healthier. I also make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen as I want to keep my complexion pale. Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense is the only product I haven’t used.
The costume design process is a bit complicated. I had three meetings with my good friend Olivier Theyskens who designed my clothes for me. I was so excited when he sketched for me for the first time that I sprinkled tea on his drawings! The second and third sessions were in his studio in Paris, where I made the clothes around me. Olivier arranged for his two friends – Mayumi and Luciano – to try on some makeup and hairstyles. My brother actually got married two weeks before me and Teddy, so I had a chance to test drive some of them.
I’ve always found it odd that some brides look completely different on their wedding day – all contours tanned. I just want to look my best. Having a French makeup artist is a dream – her pockets are full of my French drugstore favorites, Bioderma and Embryolisse. Mayumi did an amazing cat eye that kept my lids bright and shiny. I like to look pale, so she just used a little pink blush and added some pink lips. When I changed after the ceremony, she added some lining and a smoky color that lasted all night.
My hair is a story in itself. I love wearing it, but also want to take it off my face during rituals. Of course, it has to balance that crazy long dress. I tested a few styles—Olivier ended up commissioning a wig to match the embroidery on the skirt, while Luciano used a ribbon to braid a flat ponytail into my hair. The next day, it took them four hours to fix my hair. They ended up having to stitch it to the veil with needle and thread! I have long and heavy hair, so Luciano gave me a big boost (check out those teases!). After the ceremony, he brushed my hair so I could wear it to the reception with my friend Prabal Gurung’s second dress.
Before we set off for France, I went to Valley Nails and got the most radiant manicure I could imagine. But before the ceremony, my friends gently suggested that glow-in-the-dark neon manicures might not work in wedding photos, so I opted for a more neutral pale pink. Nail problems are nothing compared to the stress of walking a ten-foot train. I was so happy to be able to walk down the aisle to Teddy and it looked like I was doing it.
