Spring 2022…it’s crazy to think we’re already talking about it, but I can’t help but think of 2022…two years after the pandemic started. I’m not sure where you live, but in Tennessee we’ve been living a normal life since the first lockdown. This year I am actually more optimistic than ever that we will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Spring always brings all kinds of optimism—in my opinion, now is the perfect time to start finding inspiration for a new spring fashion. As a woman in her 40s (and approaching 50), it really is the little thing that can brighten your mood like a fresh wardrobe insert. Even just a little. Not a lasting happiness boost – but in these crazy times, I think it’s perfectly fine to find little joys wherever you can grab them.

Fashion Dos and Don’ts for Older Women

Let me start by saying – I don’t think anyone in their 40s is old. I prefer “mature” and “experienced” as better adjectives, right? While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with looking young and hip, we’re not 20-something teens or girls, are we? Most of us are mothers—maybe working-at-home moms, SAHM, kids commuting, or maybe juggling full-time work and motherhood at the same time.

There are so many interesting trends in spring fashion, and spring always seems to be the perfect time to try out new ideas or try something out of your comfort zone. However, there are a few things to consider. These are my guiding principles at 40:

Body Shape

I think you need to be comfortable in your skin, comfortable and confident in what you wear. For that, I generally think it’s best to choose what works best for your body type. If you’re not sure what type you are—classic silhouette, pear or apple, etc.—this is a good assessment, and it will also give you some advice on what dress times are most flattering.

Personal style

There are many trends, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear them just because they’re trendy. Wear what you like and what you feel most comfortable with. It’s totally fine to let some fashion trends slip away from you.

Age Appropriateness

Even if something shows up on a European or New York runway, that doesn’t always mean it’s a good choice for an active mom or older woman in real life. Most of us have casual style and well-dressed clothing when we need it every day.

However, you should consider how, where and when to wear it in the real world – and whether it’s appropriate for our age group (cropping tops and miniskirts, I’m looking at you). It’s okay to look young, but there is such a thing as trying too hard.
Practicality and comfort

As I said before, this is definitely a busy time for any woman in her forties. Even if we don’t take care of our children full time, maybe we take care of our parents? So style is important, but so is practicality and comfort, right? No one wants to push a minivan full of minis and kids with stilettos to an after-school activity.
